BELONGING - TRIAL OF LUCIFER

This series explores inner and outer conflicts of beliefs. I grew up as a daughter of an Egyptian Islamic philosopher and a Scottish Christian (albeit scientific-pragmatic) mother. Though they were both open broad minded people, who encouraged independent thought, periods of marital tension would surface as ideological battles in which each parent would condemn the other's culture.

I spent the first half of my childhood as the "English girl" in Egypt and the second half as the "Egyptian girl" in England. As a result I became nervous of any attempts to demonise or condemn another person or culture. This lead me to an exploration of demonisation within myths held by each culture and to look at the first two condemned - Lucifer and Eve. The Trial of Lucifer is an exploration of the collective shadow. It's an attempt to process "negative" myths or metaphors, which I don't believe help to create a tolerant world and to transform them into more empowering stories.
